The teams history is quite simple because it only goes back a few years. In November of 2002, I purchased my first Buell, a 2003 XB9S. In August of 2003 I participated in a B.R.A.G. track day event that was hosted by Team Promotion. Unfortunately, the event was rained out after only 3 sessions were completed. I returned to the track in the spring of 2004 and completed by basic skills class. I rode with Team Promotion several more times that season. Following that season, I purchase a 2003 XB9R to made it into a dedicated track/race bike. In February of 2005, GrandStand Designs, LLC was created to help offset the cost of building the bike. I raced in 3 events that year with the guidence of my friend, Anthony Caliguiri. It was fun, but getting expensive. GrandStand Designs aquired a new truck and trailer and a bunch of equipment as crashing became part of life for me and my learning process. Again in 2006, I raced in 3 more events. I am proud that by the third event, the GSD Race Team was able to help my friend, Seth Buchbinder, to Summit Point, WV for his first race event. The 2007 season was a difficult year for several reasons. First, I lost my full-time job as the Sales Manager of a HD/Buell dealership during a very bumby acquisition of the dealership by a nearby dealer. Second, the suspension that I "upgraded" to during the off season proved to be unridable and untunable. The bike which seemed go whereever I wanted the yer before wouldn't hold my lines anymore. Unfortunately several lowsides and a highside punished me before I broke down and had it rebuilt again. Soon thereafter my motor let go and my season ended in disappointment.
My expectations and aspirations are quite different this year. My focus has shifted to building GrandStand Designs, LLC into a full time career. The addition of many new coatings and the development of new Buell parts has taken much time and money. I am set to race at Summit Point twice in May and at Road America in Wisconsin in July. Beyond that I'm just not sure, but keep your eye on my calendar for updates. Again I am proud to be sponsoring my friend Seth and wish him the best of luck this season! Hopefully we can get the GrandStand bikes on the podium again this year.
Sept 29, 2008 UPDATE - Well my racing season is pretty much done. With only one track day left on the schedule, I can't really complain. I made one race at Loudon, NH to break in my new bike. I can't thank Bob, Robert and Angie enough for the great work they did putting my new 1203cc motor together. I raced at Summit Point, WV in May and September. Had decent successes at each event. The highlight of the year was definitely going to Road America over the forth of July weekend. Came home with my first podium finish, a second in CCS Thunderbike! And better yet, a bunch of cash put up by both the Buell Motorcycle Co and BedWeatherBikers.com. Unfortunately my weekend had to end with a low-side crash that messed up my pinky finger. Its not bad and I'm already over it. Special thanks goes out to Steve Slaughter and Dris Hammadi for helping Seth and I in the pits all weekend!
