Anodizing is an electrolytic passivation process used to increase the thickness and density of the natural oxide layer on the surface of metal parts. GrandStand Designs, LLC uses this process on aluminum parts because it increases corrosion resistance, wear resistance, and provides a decorative finish commonly found in the automotive industry.
Technically, the process of anodizing employs electrical current to “grow” aluminum oxide from the surface of an aluminum part. The aluminum oxide coating is grown from and into the surface of the aluminum in about equal amounts, so for example a .001” thick coating will increase part dimensions by .0005” per surface. GSD uses a sulfuric acid system commonly known as Type II Anodization as defined by the MIL-A-8625 anodizing specification.
This common anodizing process produces a porous surface that can accept dyes easily. The number of dye colors is almost endless; however, GSD only uses several regularly. They are silver, black, red, blue, green, gold and bronze. Custom dye colors can be obtained by request. GSD seals all dyed parts in nickel acetate to reduce or eliminate dye bleed out.
GSD offers 5 types of anodized finishes in the colors mentioned above. The part’s final appearance is based largely on its condition prior to being anodized. To achieve a flat appearance, the part is glass beaded to a satin white color. To produce a semi-flat finish, the part is chemically etched in a sodium hydroxide tank. The part can be anodized exactly how it looks when it comes off the CNC machine. The part can be machine polished in a vibratory polishing machine with different types of media. Finally, the glossiest look can be achieved with hand polishing the old fashioned way.
Because GrandStand Designs, LLC focuses on small batch, custom work, we have created a very affordable way for our customers to have just one or two parts anodized without having to pay the steep “whole lot” charges of larger shops. However, our capabilities enable us to serve medium sized production type customers as well. In house polishing and deburring ensure a perfect finish every time!
